How The Experts Choose Cat Litter And Basic Equipment For Their Cats

Before you bring your new cat home, make sure you have purchased all the necessary equipment.

Today there is a greater choice of products on the market than ever before, so choose wisely, and to begin with, buy only what you really need.

The items that you should consider before bringing your cat home are litter, litter pan, bowls and saucers, scratching post or pad, collar, grooming equipment, cat flap, bedding, toys, cage and carrying case.

The type of litter you choose for your cat depends entirely on how much you want to spend and how fussy you are about sand, clay, wood shavings and such being tracked through your house.

An economical material for litter is newspaper. Simply line the pan with a section from the newspaper and then cover with strips torn from another section. After the cat uses the litter pan, it is easy to roll up the entire newspaper and dispose of it.

This avoids unsightly litter being tracked throughout your house, and it also minimizes odor as the urine is removed from the house, along with her bowel movements. When using a scoop to remove solids from normal litter or clay, too often the urine soaked litter remain for days at a time.

This not only results in an offensive odor that will soon permeate your house but your cat very often will not want to use the litter pan. Cats do not like to be dirty or have wet feet. If the pan has wet litter in it, she may well decide that a corner of the carpet or your bedspread make perfectly fine, and dry, litter pans.

After you have disposed of the contents of the pan (the frequency will depend on the number of cats using it and the odor), make sure that you thoroughly clean the inside and outside of it, using non toxic cleaner. If you use a strong cleaning agent, make sure that you rinse the pan completely so that no residual effects of the cleaner can harm her.
