Crate training for a golden
retriever
Crate training is the best for those who don't have time to be
with the pup constantly.
It is also good to learn crate training first so that they are
able to learn how to hold it and also when you are sleeping or
busy. Even though some people think that it is awful to lock up a
dog, it is okay because it is for their own sake. It is to make
sure that they have food, water, and a bathroom facility while you
are away. It also protects your dog in the sense that it can't eat
anything harmful that will poison it or allow the pup to choke.
When you first bring home your golden retriever pup, you should
have a crate or carrier. It should be set up in an area that allows
the family to pass, but not trip over. It would be a great place to
keep your crate by the kitchen or hallway door. The reason why you
need to keep it in important places is because they need the
interaction and attention of humans. They are a social breed and
need to know that you care about them. You can place them in their
crate and then tell him that you'll be back and show them some love
right before you leave.
As soon as you bring them home, take them to crate by placing a
treat inside it. This will get them to go in it. You will need to
do this every time they get up, eat, drink, or play so that they
get use to going to the paper. Also, let the puppy wander in an out
of the crate by leaving the door open. Praise your pup every time
they go to the crate by themselves with a happy voice. This will
let the pup know its place.
Then once it begins to go to the crate on their own, close the
door once they get in it. Let them in the crate until they have
stopped whining or crying. You can talk to the dog or touch them
for comfort. Don't take them out until they settle down. Once they
have settled down you can let them out, but reinforce the behavior
with praise. It will take some time for the pup to catch on, but
retrievers are very smart. They catch on to things quicker than
some other breeds.
You will want to place your dog on a schedule. Every day you
should put them in the cage at the same time and then place a clock
at their crate. Get one that will go off and shut itself off. Set
it for the time that you will be home or near home. That is so they
know that you're going to return to love them up.
