What every cat owner should know about cat litter?
Pet supply manufacturers have designed many varieties of cat
litter, including clay, silica crystals, scented litter, and
clumping litter. Before you buy any, find out what type and brand
your cat was using and buy a bag of that. Cats become used to the
feel and scent of their regular litter, and suddenly changing types
or brands could cause them to stop using the litter box.
If you decide to change types, do so gradually. Mix some of the
new litter in with the old, and over the course of a few weeks,
increase the amount of the new type in the box. Your cat will
adjust better to the slow change and become accustomed to it.
Whatever type of litter you buy, make sure that it is very
absorbent and does not give off a lot of dust. Breathing in litter
dust is not good for your cat’s lungs. Here are a few of the more
common types of cat litter available.
The first type is clay. Clay litter is inexpensive, and it is
the most commonly used litter. It is very absorbent and comes in
several varieties, such as dust free, dust reduced, scented and
unscented. Some brands are designed for multiple cat households and
contain more odor absorbing materials.
The second type is paper or wood. Litter made of paper or wood
pellets such as pine can be expensive, but it does absorb odors
effectively. Wood pellets are a good alternative for cats who do
not like the feel of clay litter on their feet.
The third one is scoop and clump clay litter. Scoopable or
clumping clay litter lasts longer than regular or non clumping
litter, but it can be expensive. This litter forms semi solid
clumps when wet. Some cat owners like this type best because it
makes cleaning the box easier; you just have to scoop out the
clumps. However, it is not recommended for use in homes with
kitten. If a kitten walks through a wet patch of litter and then
licks his feet, he could ingest the clumping material, which could
lead to a serious blockage of the intestinal tract.
The last one is crystals and pearls. Crystals and pearls are
very absorbent and dust free types of litter. Mode from silica gel
or sand, crystals and pearls are designed to evaporate moisture and
absorb liquid without clumping. Their design make cleanup easy, but
they can be very expensive.
As a conclusion, before you bring your new cat home, you need to
make preparations for his arrival by purchasing everything he will
need to settle in comfortably. The first item that you must
purchase for your cat is a carrier. It should be made of sturdy
plastic and have a locking, grill type front door. Then, the litter
box will be used every day, so it is crucial that your cat takes
time to find it. Find out the type your cat has been using and buy
a similar one. This will make you cat or kitten will be more
comfortable and get used to the surroundings faster.
