Cat Grooming – This Is The Way Professionals Easily Accomplish Claws Trimming
If you start trimming your cat’s claw when she is a kitten,
she will discover that it does not hurt one bit and will reign herself to the process. It is probably best to trim her claws before you bathe
her.
By squeezing her tow between your forefinger and thumbs, her claw will be easily extended and can be trimmed with special clippers made for
cats. Be sure to avoid the sensitive pink quick and to remove only the very tip.
Hold her gently and talk softly while clipping. Do not panic and do not raise your voice. A loud, angry or high pitched voice only makes her
more anxious and fearful. She will not mind you clipping the front claws, but when you turn her over on her back, she may try to fight you.
Do no tighten your hold. Pause for a moment, continue to talk quietly and you might even try blowing softly into her face, at the same time
saying no in a low but firm voice. Do not let her free until you have completed trimming all of her claws.
If she is a kitten, she will need her claws clipped once a week, but when she is fully grown, every two weeks will suffice.
So, how do you trim a cat’s claw? First, firmly but gently place the cat in your lap, and then press down on the pad to extend the claw. Then,
trim the claws being sure not to cut within 1/10 inch or 2 mm of the quick trimming line. When trimming claws, you can either use scissor action
or guillotine action clippers.
Either before or after her bath, you may clean her ears by dipping a cotton swab into mineral oil or boric acid powder. Remove the dirt and
any excess wax from inside the ear flap. Never probe down into the ear canal.
